Grit Pump
Purpose: The
purpose of the grit pump is to transfer grit settled out in the grit
chamber to the grit classifier.
Description: The
grit pump is a recessed impeller type centrifugal pump specifically
designed to pump slurries containing large amounts of abrasive solids.
The pump impeller is positioned entirely out of the flow path of the
fluid passing through the pump. The recessed position minimizes internal
pump wear since pumping energy is imparted to the slurry indirectly
by a vortex created by the spinning impeller rather than through direct
contact with the impeller. The pump is driven by an electric motor
through a multiple V-belt drive. The drive pulleys are selected to
provide the speed required for proper pump operation. The grit pump
is located in the Clarifier Room of the Operation
Building to avoid the need for explosion proof equipment and reduce
the size of the Preliminary Treatment room. The pump unit is set in
a pit below floor level to provide a straight unobstructed suction
line from the grit chamber hopper to the pump. |
