Grit Classifier

Purpose: The purpose of the grit classifier (or grit washer) is to remove organic matter that accumulated with the inorganic grit material in the grit chamber and to dewater the grit prior to disposal,

Description: The grit classifier consists of an inclined steel trough with a screw auger conveyor. The steel trough has a settling hopper and an overflow box with an adjustable weir at its lower end. The dewatered grit discharges from the trough at its upper end. Grit enters the classifier from a cyclone mounted above, the classifier support frame attached to the inclined trough. The cyclone separates the heavier grit from fighter organic material by centrifugal force discharging the grit to the classifier settling hopper and the organic material back to the plant influent channel. The grit classifier removes any remaining organic material by differential settling and removes excess water by gravity as the auger conveyor carries the material up the inclined trough. The cleaned, dewatered grit discharges to a self-dumping hopper which is dumped into the same dumpster as the screenings, for hauling to a landfill by a contract disposal company.
